Blog Journal #9
I was a sophomore in high school when Covid-19 hit and my entire school shifted to Zoom classes, and distance learning. From March of my sophomore year, through September of my Junior year, we were forced to do online learning, through Zoom and Google Classroom. This meant that we weren’t able to be on campus and our classes were shifted to online lectures. In September of my junior year of high school, we had the option to go back to in-person learning, I went back in November of my junior year. I liked distance learning in the beginning, because I could do the work at my own pace, and was able to set a schedule that fit me. However, towards the end of my distance learning, I noticed that I wasn’t being as diligent about my school-work as I had been when I was in-person with a physical teacher watching me. When we went back, most assignments were still given online, but I was sitting in a physical classroom interacting with my teacher and peers. When I am a teacher, I am going to use digital learning, but only to assign certain assignments. I believe in teacher/student and student/student engagement, meaning that being able to socialize with peers and work on assignments with others is extremely beneficial, and thus, this is how I will implement it in my classroom.
Open educational resources (OER) are resources that are available to anybody in many ways. These resources are available to teachers to contribute their own educational materials, or access other digital libraries. They can either adapt these resources at no cost. An example of this would be the General Chemistry textbook located on openstax, this is a free resource to teachers to incorporate into their classroom for free. Here is the link to the ORE resource: https://openstax.org/details/books/chemistry-2e .
One new skill that I have acquired from the two Powerpoint assignments was learning how to hyperlink slides together. Prior to this assignment I didn’t know how to do this, a tool that can be useful in aiding with this would be the action buttons that I utilized throughout my assignments. This makes it easy to navigate between slides, and easier for the presenter to share with their audience. Here are screenshots of my Powerpoint assignments! In the first screenshot you'll see the lesson that I taught in Assignment 4, which was balancing chemical equations to a science class! In the second screenshot, you can see the Jeopardy game that I made for a 5th Grade Science review!
