Journal #2

When I was younger, in my elementary school years, I didn't use as much technology as much as I do now, but I did use it occassionally. Many of our assignments were on paper and pencil until my Junior year of highschool when Covid-19 hit, we used Google Classroom, then I used Google Docs over Microsoft Word, that is because many of my teachers preferred us to use other software, such as Google Docs. However, I did use other Microsoft tools such as powerpoint, as I do prefer that over Google Slides. In college, I have tended to use Gogle Docs more, because personally I find it easier to navigate when everything is stored in Google Drive.

I did learn something new about the ISTE standards. I learned that they provide guidance for tenchology skills, that should be necessary for success and growth of not only the teacher, but the individual. I think that it is a good idea for teachers to use more technology in the classroom, but should be careful about digital footprint. This is a concern because at the end of the day, kids are kids, and the privacy of all of the applications that they would be having kids use should be secure. I also believe that if more technology is going to be used in lower grade levels, than it has to be super easy to use. Kids already have questions, so they applications that they are using have to be fun, interactive, helpful, and easy to navigate. If all is done correctly, I think that technology is a good resource that can be used to ensure good learning and proper suited for the kids and their goals.

I do agree with the term "digital native" and how it is portrayed. I agree with this because some people were born into times where technology was more present, while others had to grow up constantly adapting ane making sure that they are "keeping up with the times" in order to not fall behind. I think that it can be quite confusing for older generations to constantly feel that they are out of the loop. While younger generations are growing up with it, so ultimately it's easier for them to keep up with changing times. I feel that it is easier for me to understand technology that it would be my teachers, who are considered digitial immagrants. Ultimately, I think that teachers in today's society teachers feel as though they have to work harder to keep up with the times compared to years prior where everything was completed on paper. I think that paper and pencil will start to become not a traditional way of teaching, and technology will fully consume the classrooms.

  1. Hey Joshua, I'm glad to see someone else also prefers Google Slides over Powerpoint when it comes to presentations. It really does make the process of making the presentation much more streamlined, despite its limitations as a software. I don't completely agree with the term of "digital native" though, since I believe there is a significant portion of our generation that weren't exposed to technology as much as the rest of the generation, but were still able to understand the software.

  2. Hey Joshua. I agree with your last paragraph and love how you consider the confusion older (or as I like to say, the more experienced) people may feel when it comes to encounter technology. With us being digital natives, it become easy to overlook the struggles of others. The hope is that we are able to keep up once we become older!
